Birdwatching in the Tijuca Rain Forest

In the begining was the green...

On a sunny morning of a Wednesday Winter we arrived at the Park's vicinities, already surrounded by trees, the symphoni of birds was at its thrill when Ricardo handed us his binoculars, teaching us how to set focus and aim to our colorful targets. All set, after a few settings we walk toward the middle of the square looking for the first birds to reveal themselves to our ignorance. In fact they were around there already, they natural inhabitat at its most lush scenery at the Tijuca National Park, in Alto da Boa Vista.

I've never seen so many birds in my life, not that they weren't there, I simply could not identify them on their diverse world, mostly revealed by the binoculars of our guide, with trained eyes and ears, apps years of experience leading birdwatching our guide introduced us to a whole world of birdwatching techniques. Used to guide professional bird lovers from all over the world, Ricardo had travelled countries and regions in Brazil for about twenty-five years and has a lot to offer while sharing his passion with us.

The magic of having a local specialist as a guide, completely changed my view to that children's park. Yes! When he first said we will spend 30 minutes there before the park's gate is open. I thought: really?! Wow there must be a lot to say there before we actually enter the forest, ok?! Let's go for it!

For my surprise there wasn't so much to say but actualy to see and chocking! A whole set of species which could only be observed from that standpoint! And the colors! No, I've never had the chance to see so many of them, flying free with showing off their multicolored jackets, or glimmering at the first hours of daylight. A new mardigras of winged creatures poping out from everywhere. It was one wowing sound after the other, definetly an ultimate experience for animal lovers.

And I was thinking about the other numerous times I set place on that square and just half a dozen of those. Not anymore! Next times I will take some time to remember the magic of this very first day. When all the browns gained colors. And what could I say about the sounds? Can you tell them apart? What about the names? I can't tell. The tip of an iceberg is always exciting to me! Magic! I want more! Como with me! Let's go birdwatch with a pro and then, then you will understand what I am talking about.
