This area was once the largest entry point for enslaved Africans in the Americas and remains a significant site of remembrance, resistance, and resilience.

This walking tour presents Pequena África (Little Africa)—a neighborhood that played a crucial role in Brazil’s history and the African diaspora. It's definetely a starting point to your immersion in Brazilian culture.


Meet your guide at a starting point in Saúde. Walk toward Largo São Francisco da Prainha, where the history of Rio’s slave trade, samba and carnival, sugar, coffee, and gold cycles is explained, where the legacies of African ancestral powers are unveiled. Visit the Valongo Wharf, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, where over a million Africans were brought in the 19th century. Stroll through the historical Pedra do Sal, considered the birthplace of samba, and learn about insurrections, quilombos, Afro-Brazilian religions, and the Bahian migration that shaped Rio’s culture.
